It attaches to the barrel nut with an internal steal sleeve and 6 hex screws (came with thread locker already on screws). This one has NO clamp protrusion in front of mag well. There are better liked brands out there but they are also lot more expensive and the "MI" version has a clamp on design that I think is not as good as this particular UTG. The design of the barrel nut is the main reason I chose this, and it is the reason the guard can be so slim and form fitting to the upper receiver. (hence the review) The barrel nut is proprietary and I think it is probably the smartest design out there at the moment. I have finished the build and I am seriously impressed with the quality and design of this hand guard. It's extremely slim and you can mount the only the rails that are needed, and can always add more later. 3 1/4" of barrel sticking out (4 5/8" including flash hider). I chose the 13" because I wanted to cover most of the barrel, including the dumb grenade launcher mount/barrel cut. I built a PSA rifle, with carbine length gas tube and 16" barrel, and I did not intend to overload it with a bunch if tactical junk, so this hand guard is perfect. I was not expecting it to be this good, but it is so I was compelled to review.
